The news of the FTX collapse and tech layoffs sent ripples through the web3 and tech world. How do we put this into perspective? Check out these two reads for 🧠 mental reframes:
👉 ”Taking a Long Term View of Web3” by Web3 Investors Katie Haun and Fred Wilson
Some key points:
Tokens are a built-in financial system of web3, which has an upside of rewarding contributors to open-source protocols, but a downside of also incentivizing bad actors to operate through speculation or fraud to quickly make a lot of money
Many well-known web3 meltdowns (i.e. Mt Gox, Alameda/FTX) happened to centralized companies that were offshore and largely unregulated. Companies like Coinbase, Anchorage, and Kraken have operated in the US, followed the rules, and weathered the latest storms. Web3 should not be pushed offshore or constrained, but given a healthy path forward to flourish with fair policy
Web3 innovation will continue to empower users to feel comfortable self-custodying their data and assets, eventually shifting power out of centralized companies and into the hands of individual users
Underlying innovation at the protocol level has survived recent market volatility, and will continue to advance the technology and prepare web3 for mainstream adoption

“For those who lost savings and business capital in FTX, I hope for some recovery. We3 is not affected by the collapse in any way. This feels like a bear market low and I will be watching for changes, whether driven by regulatory attention or consumer sentiment shifting to DeFi. […] Our vision at We3 is "50-50": seeing 50% of leadership roles and capital held by women and nonbinary people, starting with web3. It's especially critical at times like these to stay in the game.”
